Awesome Marvel MCU Dog Names (From Superheroes to Villains)

Dr. Mark is a veterinarian. He has been working with dogs for more than 40 years.

If you spend too much time watching movies and TV shows that are part of the Marvel Comic Universe (MCU), you have probably already come up with some great new names for your new puppy.

How to Choose a Good Name for Your Dog

Dog names should be short, just one or two syllables, and the best names have a vowel on the end so that your dog will pick up the high note when you call him. In my opinion, Loki is the best name on the entire list, but obviously not one that everyone will want to choose. (Stay away from names like Mephistopheles—way too long for any dog.)

The list I provide will not be all of the names available from Marvel, but they are the best options for naming your dog.

Before You Jump In and Name That Puppy . .

Keep in mind a few basic rules when naming your dog. You will be glad you did.

  • Do not name your dog something that sounds like one of his commands. If you find something you like on this list you will have no problems, but if you choose another name make sure it does not rhyme with sit, down, etc. (If you are not training him in English, then there may be names on here that sound like a command.)
  • Do not give your dog a name that sounds like a dog you already have. It is already going to be confusing enough in your new home, so there is no need to make it any harder for your new puppy.
  • Do not give your dog a stupid name.
  • Do not give your dog an overused name. Find something that is going to be special to you and to him.

Remember to take lots of pictures of your little superhero. They grow up fast.

Spencer, do you really not know Fisk´s first name? Are you on here claiming you are an expert but have not even watched the series or read the comic?

Before you use the internet to tell people they do not know what they are saying, it would be a good idea if you knew what you were talking about.

Just saying.

Wilson, is after Wade Wilson who is Deadpool. Matt Murdock is Daredevil, and is not an antihero he protects the poor and weak in hells kitchen. Don't put that little extra when you do not know what you are even saying.

Thanks Jenn. You also know that Loki is the number one best name for a Chinese Crested puppy, right? Go figure.

Jenn from Pennsylvania on January 11, 2018:

Love it! For some reason I really like the name Loki, which is likely to be the name I will choose for my next pet!

Dr Mark (author) from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on January 07, 2018:

It was a fun way to spend a rainy day! I think you do have to be attached to the characters to go with some of those names, but some of them just sound evil. Probably wont get confused with Mr. Wrinkles out at the dog park, either.

Bob Bamberg on January 07, 2018:

I think the best advice is "don't give your dog a stupid name." I had a customer who named his Shar Pei "Mr. Wrinkles." I loved the customer, and the dog, but I always hated the name.

I don't follow the superhero stuff, so everything is alien to me. Some of the names have a nice ring to them, but depending upon the character, they probably convey some sort of image that the dog will have to live up to. Another fun hub, though, with some common sense to close it out.

History

A guard dog confronted Hank Pym during his mission in East Berlin but Pym was able to evade it. [1]

As a final examination test, all HYDRA members enlisted in their private academy had to prove their loyalty to the organization by executing their canine companions. This personally affected Hale, Jasper Sitwell, and later, Ruby Hale. [2]

While they ate ice cream in a park, a dog was being walked past Matt Murdock and Stick. The dog was hungry and longed for the hotdog that another person had nearby. [3]

During the time Bruce Banner was living in Rio de Janeiro, he had a dog living with him named Ricky. [4] After General Ross discovered Banner's location and sent a team to capture him, Banner escaped, leaving his dog behind. [5]

Dogs, cats, and birds were sold in a Puente Antiguo pet store that Thor entered, looking for a horse. Kyle let Thor know that he could not get a horse there. [6]

Skye compared wearing the Tracking Bracelet to being a stray dog who was tagged. [7]

A dog named Buddy was the only companion of a teenaged Grant Ward when he was taken from a prison in Massachusetts to the wilderness of Wyoming by John Garrett to learn self-reliance. Six months later, Ward and Buddy had become close. Whenever Ward shot a deer, Buddy would fetch it for him.

Garrett, in order to teach Ward emotional detachment to become a HYDRA sleeper within S.H.I.E.L.D., ordered him to kill the dog before they could go to S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy. However, Ward was unable to kill Buddy, and instead he fired his gun to the air and allowed Buddy to run away into the woods. Buddy later appeared through Ward's sniper scope, as the dog searched for a kill. [8] Buddy was killed by Ward and Ward told the story of his dog to Kara Palamas, who later relayed it to Bobbi Morse. [9]

A dog named Cosmo was one of the exhibits in the Collector's Museum. He survived the place's near-destruction and showed his loyalty to Tivan by licking his Tivan's face, despite Howard the Duck's disapproval. [10]

Sneaking into his former house, Danny Rand came into contact with Joy Meachum's dog Toro and managed to calm him before leaving him behind closed doors. [16]

Spider-Man preceded to chase down the crew and nearly succeeded until he was snagged in mid-air by Vulture. [17]

Following the incident at the Saint Agnes Orphanage, FBI and NYPD arrived to the church to find Karen Page and Daredevil who were the main suspects. After FBI agents Ray Nadeem and Benjamin Poindexter found that Page and Daredevil had disappeared, they brought search dogs to track them. [18]

Marvel Dog Names

Introduction

Marvel Dog Names In Pop Culture

Lockjaw's first appearance in any of Marvel's comic books was all the way back in December of 1965, the 45th issue of The Fantastic Four comic book series no less. Since then, Lockjaw has made appearances alongside other Marvel juggernauts such as the X Men and the Avengers. Lockjaw is a typically friendly dog whose superpowers and enhanced physiology won't keep him from pouncing on a friend or family member and giving them the licking session of a life time.

The Inhumans are actually an off-shoot of the human race who were genetically modified by an extraterrestrial race called the Kree (the race of aliens Ronan the Accuser from the film The Guardians of The Galaxy is from). Black Bolt is the leader of the Inhumans and he has the ability to create world shattering waves of power with a whisper. As a result, Black Bolt has taken a vow of silence and typically relies on other means to fight crime. The other members of the Inhumans royal family include Medusa, whose hair is super strong and can be used as a weapon, Crystal, who can manipulate the elements, Karnak, who can essentially see into the future, Gorgon, the hooved, super strong member of the family, and Triton, the amphibious athlete of the team.

Marvel Dog Name Considerations

Many of the names of certain Marvel Characters are also very unique and will give dog owning Marvel fans plenty of alternative names to consider, as opposed to more traditional names. Naming your dog after a Marvel character could also serve the express purpose of letting others know how much you value your Geekdom it's not everyday you meet a person who names their dog after a green, Jekyll-and-Hyde type raging monster or a patriotic super soldier, after all. For those individuals willing to take a step outside of the box in order to find a suitable name for their beloved pets, Marvel Comics has a massive array of memorable characters who'll give you something to think about.

10 Zabu

Zabu is a sabretooth tiger. He doesn't really need anything else to qualify him an iconic pet, but in the interest of fairness, he's the trusty companion to Ka-Zar of the Savage Land. Zabu is actually the last living sabretooth in existence after his family was killed by Man-Apes. Evil Man-Apes. Zabu saved the life of young Kevin Plunder and taught him how to live in the prehistoric wilds of the Savage Land, and they've been inseparable ever since. Zabu also has been a member of the Pet Avengers, like some of the other pets on this list.

Some movies feature Marvel characters, but aren’t part of the MCU–yet. But as Disney buys studios left and right, there’s no reason these characters–with great dog names–couldn’t appear in the MCU in the future.

If you haven’t seen the action-packed, hilarious Deadpool 2 yet, it’s currently on HBO, Youtube, VUDU, and more. If you have kids, I recommend Once Upon A Deadpool. It’s edited to a PG-13 rating and features Fred Savage.

Great cat names from Deadpool include: Wade, Cable, Ajax, Warlord, Weasel, Vanessa, Domino, Yukio, Buck, Negasonic, and Juggernaut.

Venom is one of my favorite Marvel films, because Tom Hardy is such a brilliant actor. It’s currently available on Starz, Amazon, and VUDU.

Dog names from the film include: Eddie, Dora, Cletus, Lewis, and Emerson.

FUN FACT: Did you know a fan created and sold Venom to Marvel for $220? He didn’t get much money, but he’ll forever be a footnote in the Marvel Universe. Or should I say paw-note?

Blade kicked vampire butt well before the MCU even got off the ground.

Maybe you can find a dog name from the cool series: Blade, Deacon Frost, Whistler, Quinn, Nyssa, Scud, Nomak, Chupa, or Priest.

Netflix rebooted Daredevil, but he appeared in his own film in 2003 starring Ben Affleck, who recently jumped over to the DCEU as Batman.

It may not be the greatest superhero movie, but it provides names that might suit your pup, including: Murdock, Elektra, Fisk, Bullseye, and Wesley.

If your friends have taken home recent furry additions to their families, maybe they’re looking for an awesome hero or villain dog name. If they’re fans of the MCU, share this master list with them for inspiration.

I wouldn’t mind a parallel world where heroes like Thor keep dark overlords, like his brother Loki in check, or where funny, sarcastic heroes like Deadpool, beat the living tar out of villains like Ajax and his crew.

Of course, I’ll settle for this universe where I can curl up with a sweet little puppy and watch epic battles from the comfort and safety of my own couch!

Do you have a favorite Marvel film? Do you have any pups named after a Marvel character? Which names are your favorites from the list above? Let us know in the comments below!
