Chinese police officers found over several dozen frozen cat carcasses during a raid on one of the illegal slaughterhouses in Huai'an, near Shanghai. The meat was sold as rabbit.
A macabre discovery was made in an apartment building. Inside, freezers filled to the brim with dead cats were found.
The entire floor was splattered with blood, and the apartment had an unpleasant smell of rot, describes the daily Modern Express.
The slaughterhouse specialized in "transforming the carcasses of thousands of homeless and domesticated cats into illegal and lucrative trade", the newspaper said. Some of the animals were kept alive and transported to southern Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. There they were sold for 10 yuan each (about 5 zlotys). Most, however, were put to death on the spot.
