The Best Names for Your Pet Goat

We have been raising miniature dairy goats for over 12 years.

Choosing a Good Goat Name

When we get a new goat, either by one being born on our farm or if we purchase one, a lot of thought goes into naming him or her. We have had a few that came with names that we kept, but mostly even purchased ones had no name. Sometimes it will take several days of observing the goat before a name is chosen.

Observing your new goat for a few days will give you a lot of insight into their unique personality. Each one of my goats has its own quirks and habits. Some like their backs scratched; some like to be scratched right between the horns. Some are shy, and some are extremely extroverted. Sometimes a distinct marking will give you an idea for a great name. My first goat, Blaze, got her name from the white splash that ran up her nose to her horns.

I picked a name that I loved once, and it took two years to finally give that name to a baby. My son was playing a video game, and the main character was named Clementine. I loved the name. The character had dark reddish-brown hair, and I said if I get a reddish-brown girl, she will be Clementine. Finally, two years later, Tiger Lilly gave us our first set of triplets (two boys and one girl). And there was my Clementine!

That's a Lot of Pet Goats!

Between buying goats and having them born on our farm, we have had 63 goats. Each has been given a name that seems to suit them. Some names were given based on the coloring, some on their disposition. Picking names for your new editions can be very fun and entertaining. We like to be creative when giving a name. We will research different websites, etc. I keep a list on my computer of different names that come to me.

Some will probably never get used if a goat doesn't come along that fits the name. But that's OK. Names can come from books, song lyrics; sometimes, just hearing a word or name will strike a chord with me, and it will be added to the list. People love getting involved in the naming process. We always have people suggesting names when we have a new addition or arrival.

When Snowball had her first baby, it was a beautiful baby girl that looked just like her. She came almost three weeks early, so I was not expecting to see a baby. When I go into the pen to feed or just visit, the first thing I always do is count heads to make sure all my babies are accounted for. Well, 1 was missing, and I realized Snowball was MIA. So I started looking and found her in the barn with a brand new baby girl. I looked at her and said, " You are a little angel." And so Angel got her name. Sometimes they are named instantly, and sometimes it takes a few days

Ways to Find Fun Names

When I get a new goat, I spend some time deciding on a name. I ask people for name ideas. I use the internet a lot. I will search for pet names, use translators to find cool names in different languages (the name Cher means snow in Russian), and sometimes they will come from a movie (like Briar Rose) and sometimes a song.

I never know where the inspiration for a new name will come, but as long as you have fun picking them out, that is all that matters.

Some easy searches to use are Pet Names, Japanese Names, colors in different languages, etc. My daughter came up with Cher-Cher because it was snowing the day she was born. She searched different languages, and Cher-Cher was named.

Fred Bred on March 09, 2017:

I love your goats! I recently purchased a male goat and me and my wife, Sandra, have been having trouble agreeing on a name. Now, we've been observing our little man and it's really helped us decide on the perfect name for him. "Analo," because, not to be crude, but he's a real cannon out the asshole. That's alright though... that's just how me and Sandra like 'em. Makes our 'playtime' with the little animal more fun ;^) I didn't realize how LOUD goats were until now!! Haha.

Rachel on November 21, 2016:

This also helped I have a goat... I was going to name him Dallas. But I was wanting to level out my options... so iIlooked up this site and found the perfect name " Jasper ".

Jamie on March 10, 2016:

This really helped . My goat named tesse had her baby and it's a little girl but i didn't know what to name it . But i looked up this site and I looked and found the perfect name " snowball".
